Stories from Engage Befriending

Engage Befriending strives to make a difference to the people that we work with. Below you will see just a few examples of how our work has impacted upon the lives of those we visit.

Increasing Well Being...

One lady was referred to us with a history of health issues, poor mobility and mental health problems including high anxiety. She recently commented that Engage Befriending was "such a valuable service, just seeing someone once a week or so when we wouldn't usually have much contact, my befriender has been such a support & a good friend". She reported a reduction in her anxiety levels and felt she was "getting stronger all round".

Helping people connect with their community...

We have visited a lady who had become lonely after the death of her husband and increasingly isolated due to ill health. She is visited regularly by a volunteer and they both report enjoying the visits and getting on well. Once she became well enough to start going out, the volunteer took her to a local lunch club, as the lady was not confident going along for the first time. She got to know a few people there and now is happy to go by herself.

Reducing isolation...

We visit one gentleman who was left with severe mobility problems after a stroke. He is visited by carers, but is unable to get out of his flat as he has no one to push his wheelchair. Our volunteer visits and takes him once a week to a local coffee shop, enabling him to get out and have a good chat.
