Engage Befriending

Contact & Referrals

Engage Befriending connects isolated older people with their local community through regular visits from a volunteer befriender. This could be due to ill health, disability, or other reasons leading to isolation or loneliness. Our service is available to people over the age of 60 living in the Reading Borough. People are able to self refer and we also accept referrals from family/friends and agencies.

Our volunteers make visits on either a weekly or fortnightly basis for around one hour. We can take our Engage Friends out as part of this visit if appropriate. We also make people aware of activities, groups and events that may be of interest in their area. These may include lunch clubs, community events and other relevant sources of support or advice.

Unfortunately, due to the specialist care required, we are unable to support those in the later stages of Dementia. We do not provide counselling or physical care.

To make a referral, please download our referral form (below) and return to us either via email or post using the details provided.

If you wish to refer a friend, family member or service user, please do discuss this with them first so they are aware of the referrral.

Please note that all volunteer visitors receive an Enhanced DBS check, are required to provide two references and attend induction training (which covers Safeguarding). We also offer on-going training and support in their roles.
