Engage Befriending

Engage Befriending

Engage Befriending connects isolated, older people with their local community through visits from a volunteer befriender.

What does Engage Befriending do?

Engage Befriending is a home visiting/befriending initiative for isolated older people living in Reading Borough. Our volunteers each visit one person who will have been identified by a health or social care worker, charitable organisation, community group, family member or friend as requiring befriending services in their own home. The strong local community emphasis of our charity is important. We can signpost to activities, groups and events that may be of interest in the local area such as lunch clubs, community events, medical services and other relevant sources of support or advice.

The Importance of Befriending

According to research by the Campaign to End Loneliness "17% of older people are in contact with family, friends and neighbours less than once a week and 11% are in contact less than once a month." In turn, this can then impact upon people's well-being and their physical health.
